There are other options when it comes to treatment of your mental health, such as drug therapy. Drug therapy is a “treatment with any substance, other than food, that is used to prevent, diagnose, treat, or relieve symptoms of a disease or abnormal condition” (Cancer.org). Over the years drug therapy has proven to have helped thousands of people. Sometimes exercise, nature, and clearing one’s mind isn’t always the solution, sometimes people need more.
There are a variety of medications available that are out there for certain diseases. Along with that “the main types of psychiatric medication are” (Mind.org):
Antidepressants
Antipsychotics
Sleeping pills and minor tranquilizers.
Lithium and other mood stabilizers.
It needs to be made clear that medication will only work if the person takes the medication responsibly and when they are supposed to. If the patient picks and chooses when to take the medication such as every other week and doesn’t take it how the doctor prescribed, then it can sometimes cause the medication that was prescribed to either cause more damage or not work at all. There are many ways for a person and their doctor to determine if medication is the right choice for them, such as (Mind.org):
What mental health problems are you diagnosed with
What your symptoms are
How severely your mental health problem affects you.
With that being said “there are many different types of mental health treatment to help you cope with your symptoms. You may be offered other treatments instead of medication” (Mind.org). The other treatments that can usually be offered are exercise and outdoor therapy, both of which have proven successful. Overall your course of treatment depends on which works best for you.
