Mental health is as important as physical health

Updated: Mar 5

When it comes to physical health and mental health there are a variety of similarities—the two work together to help people realize what is happening within their bodies.

One’s lifestyle can contribute to the ups and downs of one’s physical and mental health. It is stated that “lifestyle modifications could be a cost-effective way to improve health and quality of life” (NCBI). If a little bit of physical activity a day can help increase your mental health a little bit, would you do it?

There have been studies that show “aerobic exercises, including jogging, swimming, cycling, walking, gardening, and dancing, have been proven to reduce anxiety and depression” (NCBI). If you think about it people do at least one of these physical activities a day, but what most people don’t do is pay attention to their mood during these activities. Exercise has been found to not only help with anxiety and depression, but it can also help improve one’s mood. With “these improvements in mood being exercise-induced it increases the blood circulation to the brain and by an influence on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and, thus, on the physiologic reactivity to stress” (NCIB). Overall physical and mental health work as a team, to have good mental health there needs to be some kind of physical activity happening in your life.
